Another Bowl Season of College Football and narratives being restored or broken is finally at its boiling point. As expected it’s very interesting. Will we get the usual suspects, or a new story will emerge. How will Bama get to the Finals this year?
Oklahoma State Cowboys (One Yard Short): There is no pity about how this season ended for Oklahoma State. They had the best season they’ve had in almost a decade. It’s too bad that they ran into a story that was even greater than theirs. This was an even match on paper that I expected to go right down to the wire. And it did. Here is the one element that killed OK State. The inability to score at the goal line. They had 8 chances to score a TD at the one yard line during their final 2 drives. What did they get? 3 points. I get that Baylor has an elite defense, but this was how the Cowboys won almost all of their games this year, in short yardage situations. Anyways, roll the clip. “Sanders throws, he flips out to Jackson, can he get there? NO HE CANNOT!” Close but NEVER CLOSE ENOUGH! What a way to end Spencer Sanders’ dream season. Even though it was a rough ending, they’ll be back. Just regroup and prepare for next season.
Iowa Hawkeyes (Fools Gold): This was the most predictable outcome out of all 6 of the big time Conference Championship games. The Hawkeyes were beat like a drum all night. They had no answers for Aidan Hutchinson. Heck they had no answers for Michigan’s offense too. This game was exactly why Iowa shouldn’t have been near Indianapolis. They only made it because they knocked out Sean Clifford, didn’t have to face Ohio State, and Wisconsin collapsed against Minnesota. Yes their defense was one of the best in the country but their offense was smoke and mirrors all season. This game proved it. And oh yeah they choked in their Bowl game against Kentucky too. This better be a wakeup call for them to recruit better offensive players. We saw what their D could do this year, if they have an offense next year they will be looking for redemption.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons (Picketted Apart): You had one quarter of brilliance. That’s all I’m going to say. 21 points in the 1st Quarter should lead to a runaway. Instead it wasn’t. Yes Kenny Pickett was unstoppable and you guys were moaning to bring in the sliding rule this offseason, but even if that was in the rulebooks this game still would have been a blowout. Why? The big guns on offense vanished quickly. Even if they had one of the best seasons in school history, Wake Forest still needs a few more pieces to get them over the top. They need to recruit defense this summer, if they get quality talent on that side who knows what they can do going forward. Yes this was a great season for the Deacons but I have no clue what the future holds for them. I don’t think Clemson will go away easily.
Oregon Ducks (Was beating Ohio State worth it?): I am not surprised about this outcome. When these 2 teams met 2 weeks prior Utah beat the living daylight out the Ducks. The exact same thing happened in the PAC12 Championship. Right from the Opening Kickoff it was clear that the Utes were the better team. This is what happens when you face one of the hottest teams in the country. (Special Teams mistakes, it’s like they never left the 2015 National Title game) Even if Oregon exceeded expectations, and was in the hunt for the College Football Playoff for much of the season, this was a painful way to end the year. This team has promise going forward and despite a certain team from California lurking the conference should be theirs for the taking next season. I expect big things, don’t let me down.
Houston Cougars (Your Princess is in another castle): Well the 11 game win streak was fun while it lasted. Too bad they had to play a Top 5 team in hostile territory. Yes I get that it sucks that the AAC doesn’t have its title game at a neutral site but where was the effort in the 2nd Half? The Bearcats and Desmond Ridder beat the living daylight out of a team that had made a lot of believers this season. Too bad I wanted to see a close game, instead Houston ran into a team of destiny. Thank goodness for their sake Cincinnati is soon moving to BIG12. That conference could be wide open for them for the next 5 years. (Especially since “Benedict” Sonny Dykes left SMU for TCU. Sorry Mustang fans)
Georgia Bulldogs (At least the Football Gods gave you another shot): I have good news Georgia, even with this loss to Alabama you were already locked in for the College Football Playoff. Why? Because of the unbeaten record of yours entering the game. The problem for the Bulldogs wasn’t them but who they faced. When you have to face Heisman Winner Bryce Young plus that high powered offense of the Crimson Tide you better be prepared. They weren’t. The so-called best defense in the nation was destroyed all game long by their passing attack. Stetson Bennett tried keeping up but to no avail. As a result of this onslaught, Alabama wins the SEC again. NEXT!
Cincinnati Bearcats (Crushed by a Giant): Just like Georgia in the SEC Championship game, the Bearcats unbeaten run was ended by one man and a machine. At least they put up a decent fight. Even with a high powered offense that crushed the AAC, Cincinnati must suffer the fate of being kids getting bossed around by their parents. Alabama must reign supreme at all costs. It wasn’t Bryce Young that beat up Cincy, it was the ground game. Brian Robinson was unstoppable and there was nothing that they could do to prevent it from happening. Anyways have fun with the move to the BIG12 Bearcats, looks like you’re only getting stronger by the year. NEXT!
Michigan Wolverines (Pure Jimmy): At least you beat Ohio State and ended those memes. That’s all I’m going to say. Even if they had their best season in about 20 years, Michigan proved that they weren’t ready for the big time. Michigan’s offense was good, their opponents were loaded. The Wolves D was excellent in the regular season, their opponents were in a class all to themselves. This wasn’t because Jim Harbaugh is a bad coach, the Bulldogs were just the better team. And there’s no shame, they are a legit contender. Speaking of Jimmy, there have been rumors that he may head back to the NFL. Teams like the Dolphins and Bears have contacted him and are trying to hire him to become their next head coach. If he leaves Ann Arbor it would be back to the drawing board for Michigan, which means Ohio State has a clear path. Unless Penn State or Michigan State does something about it. PAUSE.
This Bowl and Conference Title Season as expected was both predictable and unpredictable at the same time. Some games were blowouts, others were epics. Anyways we must reveal the final showdown of…
BOOM! Bulldogs vs Crimson Tide: Oh boy Alabama vs Georgia, a rematch of the SEC Title Game, and the 2017-18 National Championship that was won by Bama in OT. (“Mom IT’S HAPPENING AGAIN!” -Georgia fans) There are many storylines that will take place in this game. The Bulldogs are trying to win their 1st National Championship in 40 years, Alabama is trying to become the 1st team since their 2011 and 2012 teams to win Back to Back National Titles. Kirby Smart is 0-7 against his old boss Nick Saban. Georgia has not beaten Alabama since 2007, and Nick Saban is trying to surpass Paul “Bear” Bryant with 7 National Championships at Alabama. (8 overall if you count his 1 at LSU) Anyways let the games begin boys and girls!
