It’s that time of year again. When everything in the world in some cases is put aside, and the focus is on football let us begin. Football Gods I come to you at this moment to ensure that fans like me can enjoy another great season of NFL Football. May the battles be fierce and intense throughout the season. That is all we ask of you, Amen.
Texans vs. Chiefs: This game I thought wasn’t a display of how good the Chiefs could be after their championship, instead I thought the Texans weren’t good enough. This game has nothing to do with Bill O’Brien or the offense going flat for much of the game. The defense and new DC Anthony Weaver were exposed all night by Mahomes and the Kansas City attack. They played the pass all night long yet were burned on the ground. I don’t like Houston’s chances after this game, considering that another AFC power in the Ravens will be in town next week and they have to go to Pittsburgh in Week 3. It could be a groundhog day for these guys. “Houston we have a problem already”.
Colts vs. Jaguars: This game in my opinion on paper looked like a blowout but it is very clear that so far the Jags aren’t yet tanking for Trevor Lawrence. The internet sensation in Gardner Minshew flashed his potential throughout the game with the help of DJ Chark. Even if Phillp Rivers had a solid game for much of his Colts debut the Jags were always one step ahead of Indianapolis. Is this a flash in the pan performance or what.
Raiders vs. Panthers: The first game ever for the Raiders with the name Las Vegas. It appears that Derek Carr with the help of Henry Ruggs and Josh Jacobs has regained his 2016 form as he spoils the Carolina debut of Teddy Bridgewater. Despite the Vegas defense trying to hand the Panthers and Christian McCaffery victory, the Silver and Black escapes Charlotte with an early statement. Next week they get the Saints on Monday Night for the first game in Vegas.
Seahawks vs. Falcons: I feel like the Seahawks are a team that was under the radar this offseason and for good reason. Other teams in the division or conference were getting attention despite Seattle trading for a game changer in Jamal Adams. Speaking of Adams he made a statement in his first game for the Hawks. 12 Tackles including his first sack of the season. As for the offense Russell Wilson was back to his old MVP self. Running roughshod over a pretend team in the Falcons. I don’t understand why Atlanta gets ridiculous hype from the media every single year, and yet they still haven’t gotten over 28-3.
Packers vs. Vikings: The Vikings went through one of the biggest cap crunches in the league this offseason but gave their fans hope again by trading for an elite pass rusher in Yannick Ngakoue. What is the result for the Purple People Eaters getting destroyed again by good old Aaron Rodgers. It turns out that drafting Jordan Love as his potential replacement was a good idea because their demigod of a QB had one his trademark games with 364 yards passing and 4 touchdowns. It doesn’t matter that Minnesota scored 24 unanswered points this game was a total smacking.
Bears vs. Lions: The Bears decided to roll with Mitchell Trubisky as their Week 1 starter. Through 3 quarters it appeared to have backfired because the Lions were going to rough them up with Matthew Stafford back and healthy again. The Lions had a 23-6 lead going into the 4th quarter against a mediocre offense. BOOM! OH BUT THE FOOTBALL GODS HAVE PLANS FOR YOU DETROIT! Mitchell Trubisky turned back the clock to 2018 by carving the Lions in the 4th quarter and Detroit’s offense allows Da Bears to unlock their defensive abilities. But WAIT! There is still a chance the Lions drove down the field in no time and needed a touchdown to win. DOINK! How did you drop that pass D’Andre Swift? There was still 6 seconds left; they could redeem themselves by scoring a touchdown. Or throw an incompletion to end the game. Better luck next time, Religion of Barry (Sanders)!
Jets vs. Bills: The Jets had a strong finish to the season last year after a 1-7 start to finishing 7-9. Now with everyone healthy again in some cases I am interested in what they can do for an encore. BOOM! This is why the Jets Buttfumble narrative never goes away despite who they have. The offense was no match for a Bills team that was looking to make a statement. The Buffalo defense roasted Gang Green once again. I feel like it is going to be yet another long season for New Yorkers and to be honest I feel bad for them. It also doesn’t help that their next opponent is the defending NFC Champs.
Dolphins vs. Patriots: The Cam Newton era has begun in New England. Bill Belichick realizes that to succeed in a conference that has mobile and talented QBs he needs one of his own. SuperCams response was that he rushed for 2 touchdowns and made many key plays against the team that ruined their hopes and dreams last year. As for the defense they slaughtered Ryan Fitzpatrick like they did in Week 2 last year. He got torched by Stephon Gilmore and the Patriots secondary. If I am the NFL I am not counting New England out of the picture. Not with that coaching staff.
Browns vs. Ravens: You may think I would talk about my own team in the Ravens in this recap but even if this game was a blowout that made my week complete there are plenty of headlines with this game. I need to make another document on this game because Cleveland won’t stop being in the spotlight for the wrong reasons. Oh Boy!
Eagles vs. Washington Football Team (Hogs): Bragging Rights Sports Presents: The Team with No Name! By the Washington Football Team (aka the Hogs.) Early in this game it appeared that the Eagles would run over a defense stuck in quicksand to an easy victory. Thanks to Carson Wentz and a now healthy Philadelphia Receiving Corp this game was going to be a drubbing! Little did they know that they would be fooling themselves again. The Eagles not learning anything from their past experiences of taunting other teams by means of players and their fans would allow the Hogs to chip away at the deficit and get back in the game. Dwayne Haskins roasted an overhyped Eagles secondary in the 2nd half as Washington scored 27 unanswered points to win the game. I have a feeling this will be a long season for Philly if they don’t turn it around at home next week against the Rams. As for Ron Rivera and his crew of No Names the optimism is sky high for their so called “Damn Good” Culture!
Chargers vs. Bengals: Meet the Future Savior of Cincinnati Football in Joe Burrow. Witness the rise of the Bungals as he ran right past the Bolts for an opening drive touchdown! Then he proceeded to get shut down by a Chargers defense trying to regain its identity. The Bengals D looked ok. The LA offense had a few big plays throughout the game but Cincy did just enough to keep them in the game. Burrow and the offense had a chance to redeem themselves from an unproductive afternoon. They drove down the field for a chance at victory. BEEP! Ref: Pass interference, offense #18. Even if they couldn’t win the game at least they can force overtime. AHHHHH! Announcer: “The Kick is NO GOOD and the Chargers are going to win!” The Bungals once again Bungled, SHOCKING!
Cardinals vs. 49ers: The Air Raid Offense of Kliff Kingsbury looks to be one of the best in the NFL. They got themselves a generational talent this offseason in Deandre Hopkins to go along with Kyler Murray. The 49ers were the perfect test to show their might. Even though the defending NFC Champions stormed out to a 10-0 lead early. The Cards would come back into the game led by Murray, Hopkins, and Kenyon Drake. Late in the 4th they would do the unthinkable, take the lead. But who cares, the Cardinals defense on paper is no good and San Francisco looked like they would come back and win the game. Announcer: “Garoppolo to throw on 4th down, his pass is INCOMPLETE and the 9ers are going to lose on Opening Day.” This is why they play the games my friends. The Cards are looking like the dark horse contender of NFC already.
Buccaneers vs. Saints: The conquering heroes of Tom Brady and Gronk were going toe to toe with the Mighty Saints in the Superdome in a title bound for the ages. Witness Brady regain his Old Magic from the Patriots as he was about to carve up the wonders of Bourbon Street! WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE DIDN’T! WHAT IS THIS PICK 6 NONSENSE! It appeared that the Bucs were once again going to play second fiddle to the Saints as the offense had their moments but the D cracked at the worst times. I think the Bucs will get better but I don’t know if they will be on the same level as New Orleans. With that pick 6 against the Saints he has thrown a pick 6 in 3 straight games. Is it me or does the Buccaneers have a trend of having a turnover chef at QB.
Cowboys vs. Rams: The grand opening of the spaceship of a football venue SoFi Stadium opens in LA with a matchup of perhaps the two richest owners in all of sports. Stan Kroenke and JerryBoy. As for the game the Cowboys offense looked flat for much of the game. All the talent on this team and they still can’t play up to their potential. I am not surprised. Mike McCarthy waisted a bunch of talent in Green Bay and it is looking like that trend will continue for him. Even if Dallas was struggling on offense they were only down by 3 entering the 4th and had a chance to tie the game. What do they do? Go for it on a 4th and 3 at the Rams 15 and come up just short. Then with less than 2 minutes left the Cowboys had another chance at redemption. Amari Cooper went by Jalen Ramsey for a huge catch and first down but BEEP: Pass interference offense #19. Who do I side with here? This looked like a ticky tacky call that shouldn’t have been made in the first place. I would have felt badly for the Cowboys if this wasn’t the Cowboys. At least they have another chance. AND THEY FAILED! The Cowboys getting robbed by REFBALL, there is nothing like it.
Steelers vs. Giants: It was a glorious day for SteelerNation! Big Ben was back! Even as a fan of a rival it was good to see #7 back to full strength and carrying the Black and Gold to a victory over BigBlue on Monday Night. The hype surrounding the Giants new look offense was put to bed with Saquan Barkley rushing for 6 yards on 15 carries. Daniel Jones and the rest of the offense was shut down by the second coming of BlitzBurg as they couldn’t do anything all night long. As for the Giants defense. Big Ben and JuJu went hogwild on them in the second half as the Steelers regained their perennial powerhouse again. A world where the Ravens and Steelers are leading the AFC North, unsurprising news to me.
Titans vs. Broncos: The second matchup of the Monday Night doubleheader was exactly what I thought it would be. Low scoring, defense heavy, and hard to pull away. The Titans could have ran away with this game if Stephen Gostkowski didn’t miss field goal after field goal, but despite Denver having a late game lead, the Broncos are no match for King Henry and Ryan Tannehill on the final drive. Gostkowski got redemption and they gave Jadeveon Clowney a win in his Tennessee debut. Titans fans: Oh what a relief it is!
